Hi Ahab, I read the debates in the HM forum and for some reason just cannot resist giving my valuable input.

First let me start by saying that I respect your opinions a great deal. I like to read your posts. I also enjoy the fact that you are well read (apparently) and know how to state your views with an educated perspective and with style.

However, I will also point out that I tend to disagree with you much of the time. Taking you on in a debate when I may not have thought everything through would be unwise for me to do. I may feel that you are wrong, but don’t give credit to my competence to debate intellectually with you frequently. Not that I don’t feel equal in terms of intelligence, but you are just so damn wordy.

“Wordy” means that you get your point across very well—even if I don’t necessarily like it. I would tend to simply react to your statements and that makes for a poor debate with anyone.

I said before and will repeat that you and my boyfriend really are “birds of a feather” in this. He just applies the same notions differently though. My vanity approves because by his views I am a perfectly good specimen. I won’t get into the whole shebang, but he doesn’t believe that women have to have muscles for survival—we need a well-trained man made for protection. Men keep the women safe and women provide benefits because they reproduce (among other things) There’s more to his explanation and it makes sense to me, but that’s too long a story for my purposes here. By the way, NO ONE that I have ever met will outclass him in verbal debate. Not even my Dad who is also one of the most excellently “wordy” people that I know.

I agree with you about the facts of evolution and Darwinian concepts. However, I do not agree with your application of those notions. For example, let me use our favorite topic to demonstrate. Hair.

Hair is how we are identified frequently in today’s society. I am called red. My bud is a blonde, etc. You stated that function follows appearance. Using hair as my example I disagree with you. My hair serves ONLY an ornamental purpose. Doesn’t mean that I want it any less. I want my hair to be gorgeous again. Hair makes me appear more physically desirable, but my hair can be used against me as well.

Someone could completely immobilize me by grabbing one arm and the back of my hair. Long hair can be a dangerous thing because it can be used to hold someone down. Thus, my once pretty locks could be used against me to threaten my survival. Having had brothers pulling my hair and kicking my a-s, I know this is true. Yes, strong legs mean that I can run away from danger, but trying to pull away from someone who has a firm grasp of my hair is another story. Being physically pretty by today’s western standards aren’t necessarily the things that caused humans to flourish thus far—I am not accusing you of necessarily subscribing to today’s standards, by the way. Technology has changed what is needed for survival.

Finally, I get to recommend a book to you if you haven’t read it: The Mismeasure of Man by Gould. These are the notions to which my guy subscribes. You may find them enlightening.

I would also like to point out that you were unnecessarily hard on jgb21. Not all dojos operate on the principles that you stated. Yes, this legendary boyfriend of mine studied marshal arts extensively as well—is there anything he hasn’t done, I sometimes wonder. I’m surprised with as much testosterone as he has that he isn’t bald. He is the son of a genuine Navy Seal and they are serious about survival. My guy is exceptionally well trained. I pointed out to him your discussion with jgb21 and he said those things depend on the dojo. He studied in a place where belts are not emphasized. There is always more than one way to view something. I respect your views even if I don’t agree. I don’t think you should require that everyone else follow your line of thinking or be relegated to idiot level. Balance in all things is a wiser approach. I need someone to be “real” for me. I need someone to point out the harsher realities because I do tend to trivialize the dark side of life too much. However, to not see the beauty and joy in this world would be a crime as well (by my thinking). Both are there in abundance. Peace, Jean
