This is a translated abstract of 'On experimental, clinical hair promoting effect of Stigma Stanol Maltoside' by Yamamoto et. al. Pola laboratory, presented in Japan Dermatology association 100th meeting (2001/4/6-4/8).
"(snip) Stigma stanol maltoside(SSM) significantly promoted the whisker growth of mouse in vitro, where raising expression of aFGF (acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor) around hair outer root sheath was found. SSM inhibited the inhibitive effect of DHT in the system in which the shaved back of C3H mouse was applied DHT.
We reported at the last meeting that DHT specifically inhibited the expression of aFGF around hair follicle.
Thus, the result suggests that SSM promotes hair generation through stimulating hair follicle formation by means of raising the expression of aFGF. (snip)".
Shaved mouse with 0.001%DHT recovered the hairs by 19.4%, while mouse with 0.001%DHT and SSM (1%) recovered them by 82.5%. This difference was found to be the result of raised level of aFGF. 4 months trial on MPB with 1% minox made no terminal hairs, while that with 0.1%(1/10 of concentration of mouse case) made 20% rate of terminal hairs generation like Dutasteride pictures. And other 60% was mild effect.
These results say two very important newly confirmed facts.
1) We have known one of the final missing link between DHT and hair loss. Pola's researchers found DHT inhibits aFGF, the potent hair growth factor. Recently, Shiseido group found that DHT stimulates TGF-beta2, the hair loss cytokine. Then we have now two links.
2) SSM is found to be a direct inducer of aFGF. Sucralfate seems to be a weak inducer of FGF. Then we have now two inducer of FGF.
