WSMR'S
SYNTHETIC PEPTIDE CLINICAL TRIALS
& TEST PATIENT'S RESULTS October
14, 2002
WSMR's October 10, 2002 press release of their clinical trials
fueled a peptide frenzy in HairSite.
Our most recent coverage on peptide based treatment for hair loss
was about two months ago when we interviewed Dr. Michael Holick, one
of the most prominent scientists in PTH/PTHrP research. However, the
kind of response and interest generated from Dr. Holick's interview
pale in comparison to our readers' reactions to WSMR's synthetic
peptide press release. WSMR
has designed a synthetic peptide that is capable of activating a
patient's hair follicles into growth phase. It functions much like a
"hair switch" specifically designed to induce hair growth.
The peptide sequence is called Flexible Peptide S or FLEX S. On
board of the scientific advisory committee of WSMR are Slobodan
Jankovic, M.D., Ph.D., Directory of the Centre for Clinical and Experimental
Pharmacology, Dean of Medical Faculty, University of Kragujevac
Yugoslavia and Bob Hsia, Ph.D. Professor of Dermatology &
Cutaneous Surgery, University of Miami School of Medicine. According
to Dr. Jankovic, "It now appears that we can restore all of the
follicles on the scalp to a healthy condition, the implications are
profound". In
the clinical trials, FLEX S is delivered to the test patients
topically with the assistance of a special liposome like agent to
enhance penetration to the hair follicle.
Unfortunately, the major hurdle at this point is how to bring the
cost down to a level that is acceptable to the mass consumers. According
to the press consultant for WSMR, the treatment currently costs
almost $500 a month. I
feel very privileged and honored that representative from WSMR is
willing to disclose to HairSite
visitors test patient's results on a restricted basis. In
particular, HairSite
is allowed to describe the test patient's results in accordance to
the before and after pictures but strictly prohibited from
publishing the
pictures.

WSMR FLEX S' Before & After Pictures I
have witnessed before and after pictures of the test patient who
had been given WSMR's FLEX S treatment and I do solemnly swear and
affirm that the following is an accurate, fair and unbiased
representation of the test subject's results in accordance to the
pictures. I am not compensated directly or indirectly by WSMR nor do
I have any prior relationships with them that would compromise my
objectivity and independence in the following statements.
1) The test subject is a Norwood class 5-6, almost completely bald
on top.
2) The before and after pictures were taken in May 2002 and October
2002 respectively.
3) The test subject is a male, probably in his mid thirties.
4)
Regrowth on the top is characterized by new hairs that are entering
into terminal phase, ie: you can tell they were peach fuzz not that
long ago and were just starting to become thicker and longer with
more pigmentation.
5) Density of the regrowth is thin. Note note that this is only 5
months into the program. The transition from no hair to peach fuzz
to terminal hair all happened in about five months according to the
pictures.
6) Regrowth is witnessed in a small section of the hairline area
that was evidently bald in the before picture.
7) With the exception of the observation noted in # 6, regrowth
seems to be better on the top in areas near the crown and sides than
along the hairline. This observation is consistent to the common
theory that areas that have been bald the longest (usually the
hairline) will usually take the longest to regrow.
8) The second set of pictures was taken from the right side of the
test subject. Specifically it was the area right above the sideburn
between the right ear and the right eyebrow.
9) The regrowth is most impressive on the right side. The area was
very thin and sparse in the
before picture but after 5 months of treatment, the area becomes
immensely thick with excellent density. 10)
Overall, I would say that based on the before and after pictures I
have witnessed, regrowth on the top so far is similar to Waseda's
results except that it happened within a shorter period of time, ie: 5 months. On the other hand, results on the right side is what
one would hope for from a truly impressive treatment or cure for
hair loss. My
contact advised that pictures for the 6th and 7th month will be
available soon.
