New evidence suggested that
there are irreversible damages in and around hair follicles in just after
30 months of androgenetic alopecia, commonly referred to as male or female
pattern baldness.
The researchers involved in this study were N.Konstantinova, N.G. Korotkii,
N. Sharova, E. Barhunova, and D. Gaevski (Moscow Medical Univeristy).
The experiment was conducted on 15 male subjects ranging from 24 - 41
years old. This history of androgenetic alopecia ranged from 1.5 to 18
years among the test subjects. The research showed that almost all
subjects who have had androgenetic alopecia for more than 3 years
exhibited a certain follicular fibrosis. The condition was characterized
by compression and irreversible disruption of collagen fibers as well as
formation of scar-like tissues around each anagen hair follicle. A
decrease in the number of hair follicles were also observed in the test
subjects, up to 50% reduction in the number of hair follicles compared to
the control group.
Scientists confirmed that there is a "correlation between length of
the androgenetic alopecia and severity / thickness of follicular
fibrosis." It is further recommended that treatments for androgenetic
alopecia should be commenced at the onset of hair loss.
The significance of this research:
1) It is very important to start a treatment regimen for androgenetic
alopecia as soon as possible upon signs of hair loss. Delaying treatment
may lead to irreversible damage in and around hair follicles which will
diminish your chance for full regrowth.
2) The earlier you start a treatment regimen, the more likely you will see
results from the treatment given that the follicle will be less prone to
irreversible damage in the early stages.
3) It may be unwise to give up a treatment simply because it does not
generate cosmetically acceptable hair growth. While products such as
Rogaine seldom generate terminal hairs, it has been proven very effective
in generating and/or marinating vellus hairs in patients and thus delaying
the possibility of irreversible damage inflicted on the hair follicle.
4) It has now become a battle of not only about hair regrowth, but also
about keeping the follicles alive and free from irreversible damage even
in the absence of cosmetically acceptable hair growth.
