Minitor's Online Consultation With
Dr. Campbell & Dr. Woods

Dear Doctor Woods and Doctor Campbell,

Please read my letter and questions with an open mind and wait untill the end to form/base your opinions. I am a 20 year old male from the USA, now before you write me off as being too young, and being a bad canidate, let me explain my situation and expectations. my hairline is my concern obviously as you can see from the pictures, it has ALWAYS been like this.. all through my early child hood, it does not look natural at all for my face, and it REALLY bothers me. i have done quite a bit of research, and thanks to hairsite i learned a lot and would never allow myself to get a strip HT, although a few doctors have offered to "help" me. i realize that your procedure while being minimally invasive is still surgery none the less, but i have weighed the options and also the possible out comes, and i am 100% sure that you can help me. i am NOT losing hair and i am not thinning, the only reason i buzzed my head is because i never had my hair cut that short, and i wanted to see if i could pull off the shaved head look. but i really cant pull it off due to the shape of my head and face. you should also realize that i am not asking for a "perfectly Straight" hairline, or a way too low hairline.. and whatever work i would get done by you, i feel i would be able to obtain down the road even if i do have MPB. i don't look at hair transplants as a cure for baldness, i would simply wait for hair multiplication to be released to the public in 4-5 years from now, if i was looking for a cure for baldness... but the fact is that Hair Multiplication revives old follicles, and since i never had hair there to begin with, hair multiplication will not be of benefit for me and i need a FU procedure like yours or Dr Gho's to fix my hairline. another good side is that i will not require many grafts at all. I realize that the reason you do not consider young men as good canidates is because:

1. they have an unpredictable/unstable amount of hairloss (and at a young age),

2. un-realistic expectations, (they expect to have hair like a teen-ager again)

3. if you perform an operation on them now, what about down the road? there is a limited amount of donor hair, and since they have unstabilized hairloss that could be a recipe for disaster.

My arguement is that my case is different :

i do not have unstable hairloss,

i do not have un-realistic expectations and if i do have the MPB gene i will most likely start to lose hair in 5-10 years from now or LONGER if i were to get on propecia ( if i even do go bald). by then Hair Multiplication will be available, but lets just say WORST case scenerio happens: and Hair Multiplication is not available.. well since your procedure does not leave a strip scar i could simply shave my head and i would be able to live like that, as the WORST case scenerio.

the importance of me getting a FU procedure done by either you or Dr. Gho:

As i said earlier this has bothered me in the worst way my WHOLE life, i feel like i was robbed of my youth because i have always had the hairline that looks of a receeding older male. sure people comment on my hairline and Stare at it, it is not just made up in my mind. i hate the feeling when a girl is staring at my hairline and not into my eyes. but i am not considering getting this operation and taking this risk to satisfy anyone BUT myself. this operation is for me, and it is the last straw, i have tried: living with it, different hairstyles, wearing hats ect. ect. i have always wanted to do something about it for atleast 5 years now and i have tried everything i can. And again, i realize the Risks involved, i have weighed them and i totally feel like this is something i have to do for myself. i feel i have done everything else that i could do and this is the last step that i am going to persue whether it be by you or Dr Gho.

i would dearly appreciate any kind of help that you can provide me with.

Sincerly,
Minitor

Dr. Campbell & Dr. Woods' Answer

Dear Minitor,

I understand your concerns and know that you have considered your situation very carefully and have a good knowledge of the concerns of us, as doctors dealing with men your age. As you have pointed out you do not have hairloss but it is the natural shape of your hairline which you do not like. I agree that you have an uncommon anglosaxon hairline for your age , but not in certain nationalities. The problem may not be that the sides (temples ) are too high but the front is too low presently for the sides.

Our position is that we replace hair which has been lost to recover the shape nature gave you . We always replace hair in a position which will suit the person when he reaches 30, 40years and 60 years of age etc. This I know will probably not please you, as the hairline you have now I feel will probably be too low to suit your face ( I am talking distance from the highest point of your eyebrows to the lowest part of your frontal hairline ) when you are over 40.
Never count on future medical advances until they actually arrive. Forget hair multiplication, the world is still waiting for the cure to the common cold. Much ‘hype’ is needed to fund the ‘business’ of research. Many things can change in the future, even if 5 years down the track it is possible, eg your financial position, the outbreak of war etc. may not make it a viable option.

For us it would be a total failure if you were unlucky enough to have MPB and were stuck with an unnaturally low hairline and hairloss behind this as you age. We consider this possible scenario unacceptable.

Even one hair in an abnormal position will draw your attention to it. Positioning is crucial. The forehead must be looked at as it will look 20 years down the track. The natural wrinkling lines that you develop with expression must not ‘run’ into your hairline. Shaving your head through choice is fine. Shaving your head because you have to ......is a sentence.
This is a hard answer to give as it would be so easy to say yes we’ll lower it, but it would be the wrong thing to do to you .
