Hi Megan,

Wow. You just moved to another state. Very far away from NYC? That in itself could cause enough stress to wreak havoc with your sensitive hair. Are you all moved in yet?

I was so glad to hear that your husband set you straight and said that you are not making him miserable and that he loves you. I hate what this hair loss does to us.

I wonder if an antidepressant would help you. Have you ever taken one? I took Prozac for about 3 years back in the early 90's and it had no effect on my hair whatsoever, although it did help my suicidal thoughts (over other things - not my hair). I hate to hear that you're so depressed - maybe an antidepressant would really help destress you and thus, help your hair?? I don't know - it's such a hard call, huh?

I'm still taking Xanax - about 1 1/2 mg a day. I have tended to get really anxious about my hair loss instead of depressed so the Xanax has really helped me calm down. I don't want to take it forever, but for now I need it.

I also take Orthocept, Proscar (2 1/2 mg), Synthroid and T3. I don't plan stopping the Pill because I'd have to switch to some kind of hormone replacement therapy since I'm pretty close to menopause. Dr. Vliet said she'd rather keep me on the Pill at least until I'm in my fifties.

Please don't beat yourself up about having your surgery. You didn't know it would hurt your hair. Have you thought of trying Xanax to help with your stress level? The PDR has no reference to hair loss whatsoever and Dr. Vliet (who was cautious about prescribing an antidepressant for me) had no problem with prescribing Xanax. But then she's not the ultimate authority on this. What doesn't cause hair loss in me could really do a number on you. I'm just worried that you're so stressed and depressed so much and that doesn't help your hair.

I know I sound like a broken record, but please stay open about trying counseling. Maybe your husband could even go with you for a couple times to help you ease into it.

I don't know why my ferritin level went down a point. But then one point either way on a blood test doesn't mean that much. I'll just keep taking the Niferex and hope for the best.

Please write to me anytime you feel like it would help. Your friend, Dallas
