Don't listen to any doctors that tell you a iron ferritin level of 10 is acceptable; technically, he/she is right because the normal range is very broad: 10 - 300. However, all the hair loss experts that I've spoken to unanimously agree that any ferritin level below 40 can be problematic for women in terms of hair loss. Low ferritin levels can cause a very insidious form of chronic telogen effluvium, which I believe I have; I urge you to read an article by Dr. Kingsley at: http://www.britsci.com/bsfinfo2.html.
Also, l-lysine, an essential amino acid, is seen as a promising treatment for women suffering from chronic telogen effluvium; if you do a www.google.com search for telogen effluvium and lysine, you'll probably find some interesting information. I've read that it increases the number of growing anagen hairs and reduces the number of shedding telogen hairs.
I was taking 1.5 mg a day of lysine for 3 months, but got sorta lazy about it; I plan to purchase some more lysine this week and take it with 325 mg of ferrous sulfate, b-12 & 500 mg of vitamin c a day.
Hope this is helpful.
