I emailed some comments last week about the link between ferritin levels and hair loss; I've been experiencing significant hair loss on and off now for 14 years; I never had my ferritin levels tested until this past Fall when I saw a nurse at a dermatologist's office; I had been to dermatologists many times in the past and they never bothered testing my ferritin levels & instead diagnosed me with alopecia or female pattern baldness even though there was no indication or positive family history.
Also, my hair was falling out dramatically everywhere in big clumps and not gradually thinning as one would expect with female pattern loss. Anyhow, to make a long story short, I've been taking iron for about 6 months now and everyone has noticed a substantial difference in the texture and fullness in my hair; I haven't noticed this difference, because to me, my hair is still embarrassingly thin. I'm still wearing a full wig and will not take it off unless I get substantial regrowth.
But to put a positive spin on things, I do notice a subtle change in my hair; it doesn't seem as sparse and lifeless, and it does seem to be filling in in some sparse areas. However, I'm still shedding a lot more than I should be and the shedding doesn't seem to be coming under control; I do have scalp psoriasis and have been using Nizoral shampoo twice a week so this scalp condition could be part of the problem;
However, when I had my ferritin levels tested 6 months ago they were at 10, which is extremely low; I'm having them retested at the end of May after taking iron a full 6 months. Restoring iron levels is a painstakingly slow process so my ferritin levels probably won't reach the optimal level of 70 for at least a year.
There are a few supplements that I have been taking daily to increase my iron levels more quickly; they include 1.5 mg of lysine, 250 mcg of b-12, and 500 mg of Vitamin C in conjunction with 325 mg of ferrous sulfate once a day. I was told to take 325 mg of iron twice a day, but I'm too leery to take so much iron because it can cause serious health problems.
Those of you taking iron may want to consider taking Vitamin C, b-12 & lysine with the iron because they aid in iron absorption. I was also told to never drink tea for at least an hour before or after taking iron because the tannins in tea interfere with iron absorption.
I'll keep everyone posted on my progress with iron supplementation. I really hope that I can write back in 6 months claiming that I've found the key that unlocked the mystery of my hair loss.
