My iron ferritin level was very low - it was 7 the first time I had it tested & then 13 two weeks later; the female nurse who I saw at a dermatologist's office said that such low iron ferritin levels can cause significant hair loss in women; I've been losing my hair for several years now - about as long as you've been losing yours; and I am at the stage finally where I'm wearing a wig. Its unfortunate, but I have no choice.
I think that my hair loss is multifactorial with iron playing a very important role. First, there has been a lot of stress in my life over the last few years & I have health problems. Second, I had a real bad flu last year & noticed within a month that large chunks of my hair were falling out; and third, I have scalp psoriasis & itching, which certainly isn't helping & is probably making the hair loss worse.
To put things into perspective, however, and to offer some hope, when I first saw this nurse 8 months ago she stated that my hair was so thin and was falling out so bad (I had a very positive hair pull test), that its probably female pattern baldness or alopecia universalis eventhough it doesn't run in my family; everyone including elderly uncles have thick hair and I have looked at pictures of grandparents & great grandparents and everyone has lots of hair. On my mom's side, all her sisters & brothers have normal hair with the exception of one uncle who went bald in his late 50s.
I expressed this to the nurse and she said to take the iron for a full year & if there is regrowth, then pattern baldness is unlikely. I took iron two to three times a day with a b-12 vitamin & vitamin c for 3 months & then revisited her.
She noticed a big difference in the texture of my hair and said there was some definite regrowth. I saw her again recently & she noticed more improvement, especially on the top & in the crown region; my hair has filled in a good amount on the top. She rediagnosed me as having chronic telogen effluvium due to low iron stores, but also was cautious in stating that my hair may never be restored to its prior state because its been falling out for so so long.
She has had female patients who went almost completely bald who coincidentally had extremely low iron ferritin levels, but it took a full year to two for acceptable regrowth, because it takes a long time to build up your iron stores.
In my case, the very low ferritin levels are due to very heavy & prolonged menstrual cycles, and since I've had complications from taking birth control pills in the past, I can't take them to regulate my cycle; I also do not eat red meat or chicken, which isn't helping either.
I would suggest getting a good workup from a dermatologist who specializes in 'women's hair loss'; this is important because over the years, I've been to many dermatologists (mainly men) who have tested my iron ferritin levels, which were as low as 10 at the time, and was told that they were perfectly normal.
I notice now that my hair still sheds a noticeable amount each day, but mainly long, dark hairs; I've noticed rarely that short, light hairs come out, but it doesn't happen often; I think that this is new growth because my hair in general is growing rather quickly & the texture seems a little better; however, I'm not at the stage where I feel comfortable without a wig, and probably won't be for sometime eventhough my doctor and my hair stylist feel as though I'm ready to go without it.
