I was wondering how you were doing? I saw Dr. Vliet yesterday and asked her why general anesthesia can cause hair loss - she said what I had read. That the anesthesia can be a physiological stressor on the body. I also asked if I had to stop taking iron for so many days before getting my ferritin tested and she said no. In fact, they drew blood after my appointment to test for it. I'll find out the results at my appointment on May 10th.

I was told by a lab doctor that inflammation can elevate ferritin falsely and give a higher test result. In my experience, the number of points elevated seemed on many many retests to be at elast 20 and maybe sometimes 30 points, but I am not sure if I ever got a good baseline because I had a chronic inflammation ...Also a doc said that a beer the day before a test or certain unspecified meds can lower the ferritin....in an already too complex world, these factors might help make sense and keep us from overreacting to one test. At one point I quite taking iron cuz my derm said I was at 60--still too low I think--but shortly after I was retested and it was 30 or 40, going from 3 iron tabs to 1 a day. I think the upper reading was just false to begin with because one can only at best, I once read, raise the ferritin 8 points a month with ideal absorbtion and supplementation. I think info says beta carotene and l-lysine helps absorbtion along with C. Taking supplements with vitamin C juice also helps, I think. I switched to dessicated liver--and I don't know if it works or not. Maybe there's a risk with it of cow diseases?? Probably not, but who knows. I have sprouts in all but the top area of my hair now, but I have a new drug/hormone change to contend with. And that's why I'm with a sad heart cautioning people also about xanax, benzodiazapines like alprazalam, etc. etc. (many names including halcyon I think) as getting off makes my scalp less sore--but only after a month and the withdrawal has been physically very painful and must be tapered slowly slowly--these drugs are given out so easily and I didn't know that one small dose of alprazalam (the form I was prescribed) at bedtime for OVER 2 weeks and cerainly over 3-4 months can result in withdrawal symptoms which include (British research on benzo sites) sore scalp and "falling hair." Much worse as withdrawal progresses unless and even if this withdrawal process is done very carefully by TAPERING --read up and get medical help from soneone who REALLY cares. Getting a xanax script written is like being written off--only much much more potentially painful as I have electric pains at night and burning skin, tho less burning on scalp, just as I fall alseep. One needs to read up on this a lot before attempting to withdraw even after 2 weeks of use. there are great benzo sites--yahoo under--- "painful scalp" tranx --will perhaps provide enough light to see a way to get off...it's much trickier than getting off pain meds I now know...but it can be safely done with much reading and help...Since we are women, I think we are at risk of having doctors -- even women doctors -- say that this is all about anxiety. If we take xanax or benzos, it could end up being about the pain of withdrawal. Believe me I had researched pain meds to avoid problems, but I thought the same principles would apply to benzodaizapines. NOT SO, as Benzodiazapines are so much more painful and riskly--with a longer withdrawal, it seems from reading and experiencing this. I hope not to scare anyone...but I do hope we can help each other without permitting the 8-minute or 3-mintue doctor appointment to make us sicker--when we take home a prescription for the worst addiction ever. I even read an article that said give women xanax and their hair will grow in if they are less anxious!!! Really!!! Could it be, instead, that the TE process ended, and hopefully before physical addiction of the many receptors that regulate funcitons that xanax-type drugs affect RADICALLY it seems. PLEASE read up and help other women on these points and write congress or anything that can help a really sick culture understand that ciaragettes are not the last frontier. This drug should have more warnings on it that cigarettes, and they don't. Think about that. Drug companies educate doctors, provide THEM with lots and lots and lots of free samples......time passes...and then we come in with annoying complaints that our hair is falling out...and they seem annoyed and send us home with a script... We are more vulnerable to drugs like xanax causing hair loss because they affect the pituitary and adrenals--hense hot flashes when withdrawing even daily because xanax is a short acting drug...I hope noone will do any withdrawing without tapering and getting doctor's help (research what they say, I suggest tho) because seizures can happen espec. in first 2 weeks...tho more likely at higher doses. Did you know 1 mg xanax-20 mg valim??? Please be confident if you begin withdrawal with a doctor's help, but read up on this not in american literature but on benzo cites on Yahoo for a look from the british and australian research...and go slowly with the taper--not more than 10 % every week or so many have suggested. I've talked to people who tried it faster and that only got them scared of withdrawaing at all and in a tailspin that doesn't have to be ... Withdrawal continues it seems for 6 months to 18 months, often bad for 6 weeks, I'm reading. Meanwhile a major gland --pituitary --and adrenals seem to bounce around-==more hormone changes and hair loss it would seem. But while on the drug, a short benzo, withdrawal can start when the body needs a higher dose... So hair loss can happen on xanax and maybe other benzos because of the short half life..Unless iron is up to protect...so we are more vulnerable to this drug. Iron is involved in neurotransmitters, also...something to think about...maybe one day someone will study. I'm so astounded to believe that all I have written seems true!!!! How did it happen that no warning was on the bottle or given with script about length of time it would be safe to take...no warning on how to withdraw??? Nothing loud and clear and no big deal a Surgeon General is making on this drug either. We maybe need to become politically active on these issues to save women from being medical ping pong balls for misinformed or piqued physicians, or just people in a hurry who we are holding up. Boy do they get us back??
